Feuding Ala. families cause riot of about 300 with some people throwing jack irons, tire irons
(AP) 05:25:42 PM (ET), Monday, August 24, 2009 (MARION, Ala.) Four people have been arrested and one is at-large following a feud between two families that spilled into a riot involving about 300 people at Marion's municipal complex. Mayor Tony Long said the fighting between the Moore and Sawyer families began at about 8:30 a.m. Monday just off the county courthouse square. Perry County Sheriff's Sgt. Carlton Hogue said the families have been feuding for two or three years. Hogue said participants in the riot were "throwing jack irons, throwing tire irons, anything they could get their hands on." He said Police Chief Tony Buford was hit in the head with a tire iron, but not seriously hurt. Hogue said things heated up about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when a window in one family member's house was shot out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * It's safe to say these folks will not make the Family Feud auditions.*
