Start your engines! Thousands flock to celebrate glory days of car culture in suburban Detroit
(AP) 01:58:32 PM (ET), Saturday, August 15, 2009 (ROYAL OAK, Mich.) Automakers might be suffering, but for just a day, it looks like the glory days of car culture are back again in Michigan. More than 40,000 cruisers are driving down a 16-mile stretch of suburban Detroit Saturday in a celebration of the automotive heyday. About one million visitors are expected to watch. Ford-sponsored "Mustang Alley" has drawn more than 300 Mustangs and other classic Fords, arrayed along a four-block stretch. In a year when General Motors and Chrysler have gone through bankruptcy court, this Cruise has participants feeling more nostalgic about their vehicles. The event is also an economic engine for Michigan. The impact of the 2007 cruise was estimated at $56 million _ about $7 million better than the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * The Motown Sound of engines in Detroit City ! Perhaps James took a short detour to Arizona via Detroit in joining the cruise... Happy Motoring !! * |
